In conjunction with the esteemed NEA American Masterpieces: Chamber Music program, this performance is the second incarnation of Horvitz’ These Hills of Glory for string quartet and improvising soloist. Support for the project was provided to showcase the work in two radically different settings, demonstrating the impact of the environment on the composition and the soloist. The first incarnation featured violinist Carla Kihlstedt performing at the Nordstrom Recital Hall, the second will feature clarinetist Beth Fleenor at the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater, this January.
In addition to the Horvitz piece, the program will also feature a performance of a new string quartet by Robin Holcomb, and an entire set of “neo-chamber avant noise jazz” ensemble Figeater, led by Fleenor.
In Figeater, Fleenor recognizes the audience and environment as members of the performing ensemble as she surfs sounds ranging from acoustic chamber quartet to jazz ensemble, to metal band, alien pop outfit, and beyond. The cumulative performance will take listeners deep into uncharted improvised territories while exploring Fleenor’s range as an improviser.
This concert is made possible by generous support from NEA American Masterpieces and Earshot Jazz.
